There are a couple of things you need to check first. If the DirecTV receiver is not an HD model, you obviously cannot get to 1080 (HD in other words). If you do have an HD receiver you need to hook it up to the TV using the composite video (red, green, blue) cables and a separate audio cable. If you have a receiver with an HDMI (looks like a USB cable) output and a TV with an HDMI input, then that one cable will connect the audio and video.
