Joe Ski asked:
I bought a LCD TV that can go up to 1080. I have an older DirecTV box and have contacted it using a S-Video cable. The TV shows 480. Is that a function of the receiver? I have a SD-HBH receiver.

S-video is only capable of going to 480. There are a couple of things you need to check first. If the DirecTV receiver is not an HD model, you obviously cannot get to 1080 (HD in other words). If you do have an HD receiver you need to hook it up to the TV using the composite video (red, green, blue) cables and a separate audio cable. If you have a receiver with an HDMI (looks like a USB cable) output and a TV with an HDMI input, then that one cable will connect the audio and video. However, until you are using a composite or an HDMI cable, you will never get to 1080.
You will not get 1080 out of this box. You will need an HD Directv box, connected by either component or HDMI cables. You also need to pay extra for the HD service from Directv. You should also be able to connect an over-the-air antenna to the HD box and receive local HD programming for free.
