The set needs to be less than 33″ wide so that eliminates some sets with side speakers. What to stay in the $700 range, but will consider higher if necessary.
Since the cable here does not have many HD broadcasts, I want a HD TV that also has a good picture on regular digital broadcasting.

I bought a westinghouse and I love it.
ok . only the higher end brands will show non-hd material better. thats because the higher end brands use better quality parts and processors. westing house is not a good brand. you would want a brand like. toshiba, panasonic, sony samsung, sharp, these brands are hell of allot better that brands like, olivia, vizio, magnavox, emerson, sanyo, , you really get what you pay for in hd tvs. better quality = more money, its just the way nature works. and you want better quality. good luck
SD on an HDTV will not look as good as on a standard SD set of comparable size. How bad it will look varies from, just a little bit worse from eight feet away, to awful no matter where4 you sit.
Most stores won’t show you the sets with SD signals into them.
The only way you can get an idea before you buy is by looking for a professional review.
The March issue of Consumer Reports reviews a large number of sets and rates their SD performance
The Olevia 32″ is rated very good for SD performance and is in your price range..
Unfortunately, none of the sets rated excellent are in your price range. However, you should look at the magazine (you should be able to find it in your library)-you never know when you might get a good sale on one of the better sets.
I suggested Olevia because CR indicates that preliminary data for their reliability looks good. I don’t expect the same for the other lower tier sets.
