Christopher asked:
he has an HD cable box. I just went and bought an LCD HD TV today and am going to exchange my current cable box for an HD box later on in the week. Im wondering what would be the difference If I just did that or bought an HDMI cable and hooked that up? Or do I not need an HDMI cable?

An HD box will let you watch an HD signal on your TV, which looks better because it has more pixels and therefore more detail. This HD signal can only be carried between the TV and the box via an HDMI cable or a component cable (3 cables for colours and 2 for audio left and right). It is possible that your existing box could be capable of upscaling a normal picture to an HD picture if connected appropriately, but this will never be ‘real HD’ and therefore not as clear. It is also unlikely that your box can do this. As you know, an HD box can really make a difference when watching TV.
Edit:
Uh, Grumpy Mac, that’s kinda what I wrote. I was trying to explain that buying an HDMI cable could be useful if he has a box that upscales a signal, and also that the only way to get HD on your TV is to get an HD box with an HD connection. Basically, you haven’t added anything more than I did, maybe you should read the answers properly before you answer yourself.
Get the HDMI cable if your tv has the capacity for it. We have a big screen plasma HD with the HDMI cable but even with that, the picture is better on our smaller built in HD LCD in our bedroom. However the HDMI carries more data so your picture will be better than without.
the hdmi cable is gonna give you clearer picture
1000% get the HDMI
Wow – dont any of the people who answer actually read the question?
No – a HDMI cable wont do anything – and you probably could not even hook it up to your standard def Cable box.
To get the better picture – you MUST upgrade to HD service.
You then have a choice of HDMI or HD Rated component cables to carry the signal from the new box to the TV.
HDMI is the better choice.
So you need to do both.
