Consumer Reports November issue has the list of best tv's. There is no burn-in on modern plasma tv's. That ended in 2005. Plasma's have a 10% repair rate in their first year. LCD's have 20%. Since they are both covered for warranty it is not a big factor. But after 1 year the difference can cost you money.
For the environment, plasmas run hot. They burn energy. The picture quality is almost equal for both plasma and LCD's. Both look wonderful..

Plasmas do show a more natural picture than LCDs. They even get rid of the jagged lines you often see on LCDs. And they are definetely more sharper than LCDs.
LCDs have an advantage if you are hooking up a PC to it, because of their more splashy colours (if you like them)
If you are a movie guy, then Plasma is the best. LCDs come nowhere close to it.

About burn in, don't worry about it. We are now in the 11th generation of Plasma panels, such issues have disappeared. Trust me, I play games with constant HUDs....and never a burn in.

It depends what you want to use your TV for.
If you are a gamer, plasmas may have better picture, but the response time is a lot greater and there for what you see on the TV will actually be delayed.

As far as the plasmas burning out, I wouldn't be worried. TVs have evolved where as when the TV burns out, it will most likely be time for a new TV anyway.
