How do I optimize my LCD HDTV picture?

lcd picture
Jimmy asked:

I just bought the VIZIO 42″ 1080p FHDTV from Costco and I was wondering if anyone knew how to optimize the picture. I know I can call Costco’s free tech support but I figured I might get a better answer here.

just read the manual and spend 20 or 30 minutes messing with all the video settings until you find settings that look best. you should be able to adjust the contrast, brightness, backlight, color, tint, sharpness, etc.

You want it set CLOSE to ISF certification WITHOUT buying the ISF disc?

If so, set brightness, color, tint HALFWAY, and picture/contrast controls 2/3 to Maximum….

That’s REAL Close to ISF….without the cost of the disc.

    Two KEY parts is this…..

You set your Brightness control so a person dressed in BLACK, you can see the details like the pockets/lapels IN THE BLACK.

You set the brightness FIRST, then….

Set the Contrast or Picture control to see the Details in a WHITE shirt or Jacket….without it disappearing (that’s too white!)

Then you MAKE SURE your sharpness and tint are halfway—don’t change either one.

THEN you adjust the color control so that SKIN color is not DAYGLO, but reasonably close to YOUR own skin….

Now remember….there are Yellow people and pink skin tones on people….you don’t match the skin tone you match the INTENSITY or vibrance of their flesh to yours….
If it looks pale to you, bump it up a square or two…..

You need a calibration disc to maximize your Vizio settings. Rent from Blockbuster a DVD entitled “The Incredibles,” in which there is a “Set Up” option called “THX Optimizer.” Following the simple instructions and your TV will be set to the current movie industry standards for TV viewing.

    Good luck!
